Root canal treatment
Inside each tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. When it becomes infected or inflamed, through deep decay, a crack or an injury, root canal treatment removes it, cleans the canals and seals them. The alternative is usually removing the tooth, and we go through both options with you.
What happens
Assessment
We examine the tooth and take an x-ray to see the roots and how many canals there are. That sets the fee, so you get the quote at this point.
Cleaning the canals
Under local anaesthetic, the pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned and shaped. A dressing goes inside and a temporary filling on top.
Sealing
At a second visit, sometimes a third, the canals are filled and sealed.
Protecting the tooth
A back tooth that has had root canal treatment is more likely to break, so most need a crown afterwards. We explain why, and the cost, before you decide.
What this covers
- Assessment and x-rays
- Treatment of front and back teeth
- Relief for a painful tooth at the first visit
- Referral to an endodontist for complex cases
Things worth knowing
- Root canal treatment usually takes two or three visits.
- Not every tooth can be saved. If we think yours cannot, we tell you and explain the alternatives.
- Some teeth have curved or narrow canals that are better treated by a specialist endodontist. We refer those on.
