Frequently asked questions
The questions people ring and ask before booking, grouped by topic.
Appointments
How do I book a first appointment?
Use the booking form on this site or call the practice during opening hours. For a first visit we book a 45-minute appointment, which is longer than a routine check-up, so there is time to talk before anything happens.
How quickly can I be seen?
Routine appointments are usually available within a week or two. If you are in pain, say so when you contact us — we keep time aside each day for people who need to be seen quickly.
What if I have a dental emergency?
Call the practice on (03) 5550 1234. During opening hours we will fit you in the same day wherever we can. Outside hours, the message on that number directs you to after-hours care. If you have facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or an injury from an accident, go to a hospital emergency department instead.
Can I ask for a particular dentist?
Yes. Name them on the booking form or when you call. It may mean waiting a little longer for a suitable time.
What happens if I need to cancel?
Let us know at least 24 hours ahead and there is no charge. A fee may apply for repeated short-notice cancellations, because a long appointment cancelled late usually cannot be filled. We tell you before charging one.
Costs and rebates
What will it cost?
It depends on what is needed, so we examine first and quote afterwards. You get the cost of any recommended treatment in writing before it is booked, including the option of doing nothing.
Do you take private health insurance?
Yes. We process health fund claims on the spot with HICAPS, so you pay only the gap on the day. We can give you the item numbers in advance so you can check what your fund covers.
Is my child eligible for bulk billing?
Many children are eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, a Medicare scheme that covers a capped amount of basic dental work over two calendar years. We check eligibility for you at the appointment.
Do you offer payment plans?
For larger treatment plans, yes. We will explain the terms in full and in writing before you agree to anything.
Your visit
I am nervous about coming in. What can you do?
Tell us when you book, and again when you arrive. That means a longer appointment, an explanation before each step, and stopping whenever you ask. Many first appointments are a conversation and a look, with nothing else done.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Your Medicare card, your private health fund card if you have one, a list of any medications you take, and the name of your previous dentist if you would like us to request your records. If you have completed the new patient form online, that is everything.
Do I need to fill in the new patient form before I come?
It is not compulsory, but it saves about ten minutes in the waiting room and means the dentist has read your history before you sit down.
Is there parking?
There is metered street parking on Example Street, a paid car park in the building next door, and an accessible bay directly outside the entrance. The practice is on the ground floor with step-free access from the street.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, and you are welcome to have them in the room. Parents stay with children for the whole appointment.
Something not answered here?
We cannot give advice about your own teeth without seeing them, so anything clinical needs an appointment. For anything else, send us a message.
Ready when you are
Requesting an appointment takes about a minute. If it is urgent, call instead. We keep time aside each day for people who need to be seen quickly.
