Crowns and bridges

A crown is a cap that covers the whole of a tooth weakened by a large filling, a crack or root canal treatment. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by attaching a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side. Both are made to fit in a dental laboratory.

What happens

  1. Planning

We examine the tooth, take x-rays, and go through the options, including a large filling, an implant or no treatment, with the cost of each.

  2. Preparation

Under local anaesthetic, the tooth is shaped and a scan or impression is taken. You leave with a temporary crown.

  3. Fitting

About two weeks later, the finished crown or bridge is checked for fit and bite, and cemented in place.

What this covers

  • Ceramic crowns
  • Crowns after root canal treatment
  • Three-unit bridges
  • Replacing older crowns

Things worth knowing

  • A crown means permanently removing some of the tooth's outer layer.
  • Crowns and bridges do not last forever. We tell you how long they usually last and how to look after them.
  • A bridge relies on the teeth either side, which need to be healthy enough to support it.
